The running order is derived from Philips "Guide To Mushrooms and Toadstools".
While this may be an exhausting list of species, it is not exhaustive(for Rowhdege). Many "edible"species have been passed up if not deemed to be worthwhile, i.e., I aim for the "Quite good" or better characterisation The scoring is entirely subjective and therefore not necessarily in agreement with The Authorities. This may be because I may not yet have found optimum ways of cooking each type. It is noticable that many famed chefs’ recipes do not use different cooking times, or methods, for specific wild mushrooms. This is clearly incorrect. I can recommend the recipes, and the approach to fungi, in Richard Mabey’s "Food For Free". There you will get a good idea of the need for a range of techniques.
This is obviously not intended as an identification guide, indeed there are probably labels attached to pictures that are incorrect. In my defence I find that every time I consult a new book I find that species that I knew have been renamed because of improved scientific methodoligies, eg. DNA analysis. Careful observation is the vital ingredient in avoiding mistakes.
No guessing!
Notes:-
{note 1} Although these Amanitas are edible and quite good I usually heed the advice to by-pass the group because of the dangerous, even deadly, members of the family. Death Cap (Amanita phalloides), for instance is regularly seen hereabouts.
{note 2} Although cooked and eaten in Rowhedge these were gathered in what is strictly West Donyland/Friday Woods.
{note 3} Not worth repeating the experience.
